Field Notes 1/1/13-5/31/13

A total of 40 species of butterflies were reported in the first five months of 2013, compared to 55 species reported in the first 5 months of 2012 and 41 species reported in the first 5 months of 2011.

Of the 40 species that emerged during this reporting period in 2013, 12 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2012 and 23 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2012. Only 3 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2012. Given the harsh winter and late spring, it is not a suprise that the first butterflies of the year emerged later than they did in 2012. The report of Sachem on May 27th documented that this species successfully over-wintered in the state despite the cold, snowy winter and late spring. The report of Sleepy Duskywing on May 18th was notable because this is a state listed species.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
